KT Book Reviews Author Spotlight: Kate Meader

Who is Kate Meader?

Originally from Ireland, Kate cut her romance reader teeth on Maeve Binchy and Jilly Cooper novels, with some Mills & Boon thrown in for variety. Give her tales about brooding mill owners, oversexed equestrians, and men who can rock an apron or a fire hose, and she’s there. Now based in Chicago, she writes sexy contemporary romance with alpha heroes and strong heroines who can match their men quip for quip.

New Release!
SPARKING THE FIRE, the final book in the Hot in Chicago series about firefighting foster siblings. The Dempseys. This last entry is about sexy-stoic brooder, Wyatt Fox, and the one who got away, Molly Cade, Hollywood A-lister. Releases September 27, 2016.

The blurb:
Kate Meader’s blazing Hot in Chicago firefighter series has “everything you want in a romance” (RT Book Reviews, Top Pick)! The flames of desire burn out of control in this sexy third novel when ex-lovers unexpectedly reunite for a sizzling affair that will have the director yelling, “Quiet on the set!”
Actor Molly Cade, America’s fallen sweetheart, finally has her shot at a Hollywood comeback with a dramatic new role as a tough-as-nails firefighter that promises to propel her back to the big time and restore her self-respect. Wyatt Fox, resident daredevil at Engine Co. 6, needs a low-key job to keep him busy while he recovers from his latest rescue stunt. Consulting on a local movie shoot should add just enough spark to his day. Especially when in struts Molly Cade: the woman who worked his heart over good, and then left him in the Windy City dust.
Their story is straight out of a script: irrepressible, spunky heroine meets taciturn, smoldering hero. But these two refuse to be typecast, and when the embers of an old love are stoked, someone is bound to get burned…

Q & A

When did you know writing was what you wanted/needed to do?

In late 2010, I found that I was stuck in a rut. I would come home, eat dinner, and settle in for a night of TV – every night. I started to wonder what I was missing and if this was how I wanted to go out! Like a lot of people, I suspected I had a book in me, so I did National Novel Writing Month that year. About 18 months later I found an agent, sold that first book as part of a three-book deal, and haven’t looked back.
Will we see any new works from you soon? What will they be?
I’m moving from fire to ice! My next series will be about a failing Chicago hockey franchise run my three half-sisters who are forced to work together by the terms of their estranged father’s will. A lot of sports series are hero-centric and I thought it would be fun to write one where the women run the show because they already own the heroes – financially - before the romances start. The guys will have to deal with female bosses, both in and out of the bedroom! There will be a prequel novella in March 2017, then the first full-length book will be released in Summer 2017. How about my favorite book boyfriends instead? YES
So many fictional boyfriends, so little time. Here are a few of my favorites, in no particular order (okay, I’d cut you to get with Hardy Cates):
a.  Rowdy Yates from Getting Rowdy by Lori Foster.

With his sketchy past, and his penchant for hitting first and asking questions later, Rowdy is a great protective alpha. And the cover for this book is perfection.

b.   Flynn from Willing Victim by Cara McKenna.

Construction worker-boxer with a taste for rough role-playing, and while we never get inside his head, McKenna lays it all out there. A Boston bruiser I wouldn’t mind meeting in a dark alley.

c.   Hardy Cates from Blue Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas.

Rich, Texan, from the wrong side of the tracks, and so caring of the heroine. LK writes the caretaker alpha so well, and Hardy is my favorite of her heroes.

d. Joey Miller from Collision Course by K.A. Mitchell.

This is an M/M romance and while some people probably prefer the brooding Aaron of this pairing, I love, love, love the manipulative, puppy-eyed, totally grounded Joey. A surfing social worker, he’s the perfect match for a guy who’s been screwed over by the social services system.

e.  Lord Vere from His at Night by Sherry Thomas.
He’s a secret agent posing as a society idiot! What’s not to love?

Will you be attending any signings or conventions? Where and when?
I have two on my schedule right now:
Chicago area signing with romance author Sonali Dev at Anderson’s Bookstore in Naperville, Illinois on September 29 at 7pm. Details here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1722386868011871/
RT Booklovers Convention in Atlanta, GA, May 2-7. I’ll be attending the giant book fair on the Saturday during the convention.
Fun Facts about Kate:
  • I got married in a tenth century castle nestled in the hills of Florence, Italy.
  • I hate peanut butter, pretzels, and ketchup. These dislikes are enough to label me “un-American” by my husband.
  • I have degrees in law (useless), medieval history (not as useless), and library science (yay, using). P.S. Twelfth century nuns rock.
  • I didn’t write any fiction until well into my thirties, proving it is never too late to follow your dream.
  • I’m a dual citizen: Irish and American. When I became an American citizen, my husband played a prank on me that was 17 years in the making. One day, I’ll share that story but for now, it remains locked in the vault!
