A mythic warrior who'll stop at nothing to possess her...After enduring years of torture from the vampire horde, Lachlain MacRieve, leader of the Lykae Clan, is enraged to find the predestined mate he's waited millennia for is a vampire. Or partly one. This Emmaline is a small, ethereal half Valkyrie/half vampire, who somehow begins to soothe the fury burning within him.

A vampire captured by her wildest fantasy...

Sheltered Emmaline Troy finally sets out to uncover the truth about her deceased parents—until a powerful Lykae claims her as his mate and forces her back to his ancestral Scottish castle. There, her fear of the Lykae—and their notorious dark desires—ebbs as he begins a slow, wicked seduction to sate her own dark cravings.

An all-consuming desire...

Yet when an ancient evil from her past resurfaces, will their desire deepen into a love that can bring a proud warrior to his knees and turn a gentle beauty into the fighter she was born to be?
4 stars****

There is one thing I do love about Kresley Cole...  she isn't afraid to create a character that isn't sugar coated and saccharin sweet and take us to the edge a little.  That's exactly what she did with the character Lachlain.  Yes, he does some things in the beginning that made me a little uncomfortable.  But, considering where his mind was at the time it was an appropriate reaction. Lachlain was a little out of his mind and loopy having just freed himself from a couple of centuries of torture.  Mix that with the sudden instinctual need to claim his mate, who is a vampire...  a breed he hates...  well, that is definitely a recipe for some unacceptable behavior.  After all, this is paranormal and these characters are driven by instinct and need and I liked that the author stayed true to his nature.  He is a werewolf so therefore he would definitely have animalistic instincts that would occasionally take control of his behaviors.   As the story progresses his mind becomes stronger and clearer and he realizes the error of his ways which triggers the guilty conscience.  Everything came full circle at that point and I truly felt he redeemed himself by the end.
Some people might think that Emma was weak... well, yes she was... but, only because the Valkyrie had sheltered her to the point where weakness was all she knew. The one thing I really liked about this book was watching her come into her own and realizing that she was stronger than she thought. You really have to read this book all the way through to truly appreciate this relationship and make sense of all of the bad behavior in the beginning. And, they are perfect for each other. She is stronger with him... and much more empowered. The Valkyrie would have kept her weak and timid and smothered.

This is a very creative paranormal world... love the Valkyrie... what an entertaining bunch of gals!

A strong start to this series that has left me wanting more!  So, I guess it's on to book two...  :)
