~AUTHOR SPOTLIGHT ~ LAURA DRAKE~

Laura Drake is a city girl who never grew out of her tomboy ways, or a serious cowboy crush. She writes both Women's Fiction and Romance. In 2014, Laura realized a lifelong dream of becoming a Texan and is currently working on her accent. She gave up the corporate CFO gig to write full time. She's a wife, grandmother, and motorcycle chick in the remaining waking hours.
She sold her Sweet on a Cowboy series, romances set in the world of professional bull riding, to Grand Central. The Sweet Spot won the 2014 Romance Writers of America®   RITA® award in the Best First Book category.
Her 'biker-chick' novel, Her Road Home, sold to Harlequin's Superromance line, and has expanded to three more stories set in the same small town.

Laura’s first women’s fiction, Days Made of Glass, released January, 2016

Q & A with Laura Drake

What do you want people to know about you and your process? I write real characters in could be real situations. My books are emotional, and sometimes hard-hitting, but I'll never leave you in a bad place - there's always an uplifting resolution.

I want readers to remember that, even if they're going through tough times, things can change in a moment. As Ivy Baker Priest said, "The world is round, and the place that seems like the end may also be the beginning".

Will we see any new works from you soon? What will they be? After having 8 books released in three years (whew!) I've just taken over a month off from writing. I always say if I'm not in a coma, I'm writing, so this was a big deal for me! But while on my motorcycle/fly fishing vacation, I got an idea (I so love it when I run into ideas when I'm not looking for them). I'm beginning a proposal for another women's fiction, tentatively titled, Mayfly Summer.

Top five reads? (all time or current, your choice) This is such an impossible question, and yet I can't stop shuffling books on the list! It's a sickness, I swear!  But here's my current list:

Atlas Shrugged - Ayn Rand
The Stand - Stephen King
South of Broad - Pat Conroy
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
King's Oak - Anne River Siddons

What are your favorite foods. I was having this conversation with my 12 year old grand daughter this week. We couldn't narrow it down, so we cheated and named categories of foods. Mine were: Coffee, Mexican, Chinese, any kind of bread (I came by these hips honestly!), and coffee. Oh, and coffee!

  4. I am excited to read this book. I will be looking for your other books. Where do you get your ideas from? Life experiences or somewhere else? How did you get published at first?

    1. Thank you, Sheila. My books are braided - my experiences, woven into lives I wished I'd lived! That's the advantage to being a writer, you can go back and make everything come out okay in the end!

It took me 15 years to sell a book (hey, I'm a slow learner), but my first, The Sweet Spot, went in a small bidding war, and ended up winning the RITA for Best First Book! Late bloomers can come out ahead in the end, if you keep working at it! 8 books out now, and I know I'll never stop - best job in the world!

    2. Oh, we agree (and relate) with so much of this, from late bloomers to best job in the world! Write on!

  5. Anyone who likes Anne Rivers Siddons (Patty's latest new fave) must surely write books we will love! Can't wait to read! And Roz is happy to have another fellow Texas transplant!! Roz might have to work on her Texas accent, too, since she recently returned from her roots across the pond.

    1. Oh, most people I know don't know Anne Rivers Siddons! I feel like I found a friend! My fave is King's Oak. Yours? Where is Roz? Everyone I hear of lives a loooong way away from me!

    2. Oh, a friend indeed!! I [Patty of Roz and Patty :-)] happened upon HOMEPLACE when Amazon presented it on my Kindle in the middle of a sleepless night. On sale for 1.99. WHAT A BARGAIN. Am about done with it now and ready to move down her list. Will read KING'S OAK next, thank you! (Unless, of course, I'm reading a Laura Drake book!) I LOVE her vast vocabulary and that I can look up new-to-me words right on the spot with Kindle! Roz is in Houston. My husband and I only WANT to live in TX :-) Roz and I both have read all your favorite books/authors. Good choices!

    3. Yeah, see? I'm in West Texas, and 6 hrs from Houston! This state is SO huge! After you're done reading mine ;) read all ARS' books - there's honestly not a bad one in the bunch!

    4. Yes, it is HUUUUGE. My husband and I have driven across it many times, going to California after visiting Roz. So excited about all the good books now on my (mental) TBR list! Sometimes I think I should quit writing and just read :-) J/K, Roz!

  8. Hi, I am married to a Texan and all my kids are Texans. We lived in the Panhandle and in West Texas but now live in South Carolina to be near my mom. We really miss Texas. I love your posts on Facebook. They brighten my day. I love your books!

    1. KC Crocker, YOU ARE A WINNER!!! you can choose a paperback or ebook, whichever they'd prefer. Unless you're outside the U.S. - then it has to be an ebook. Please send you e-mail or mailing address to ktbookreviews@gmail.com
