It's LIVE! The Bird and the Sword by Amy Harmon

Swallow, Daughter, pull them in, those words that sit upon your lips. Lock them deep inside your soul, hide them ‘til they’ve time to grow. Close your mouth upon the power, curse not, cure not, ‘til the hour. You won’t speak and you won’t tell, you won’t call on heav’n or hell. You will learn and yo...u will thrive. Silence, Daughter. Stay alive.
The day my mother was killed, she told my father I wouldn’t speak again, and she told him if I died, he would die too. Then she predicted the king would trade his soul and lose his son to the sky.
My father has a claim to the throne, and he is waiting in the shadows for all of my mother’s words to come to pass. He wants desperately to be king, and I just want to be free.
But freedom will require escape, and I’m a prisoner of my mother’s curse and my father’s greed. I can’t speak or make a sound, and I can’t wield a sword or beguile a king. In a land purged of enchantment, love might be the only magic left, and who could ever love . . . a bird?

There is one thing that you can always count on from Amy Harmon and that is a book that is well crafted, beautifully written and gives us something completely different each and every time she writes a book. This book was intoxicating! It grabbed me from page one and didn't let go until the very last word. If you've never read fantasy before then you are definitely in for a treat with this story. It is unusual, original and has all the elements I love in fantasy.
The author did an incredible job of creating this unique world of gifted creatures. It is a story of two people both touched by gifts that held them prisoner in many ways. They were brought together by fate and the story that unfolds gives us a tale of love that is one of the most original that I've read in a long while.
There is a wonderful cast of characters in this book with the dwarf BooJohni being my absolute favorite. I dare you not to fall in love with how much he loves Lark. He is her only true friend and lifelong guardian.
My favorite aspect of this book is the fact that Lark is plain and ordinary in appearance but her hidden gift is extraordinary and that is where her true beauty shines.

Her inability to speak words allowed for an unusual coming together between her and King Tiras that was touchingly intimate. Her gift and his need for her gift forced them to see each other for who they truly were underneath the masks and layers. He was able to slowly bring out her voice, her powers and her true purpose. And, she did the same for him. An unlikely match, but perfect nonetheless.
I honestly could go on and on about this wonderful book but I hesitate to say anything else about the story because it's better if you don't know too much going in and just let the story slowly unfold and surprise you. Even if you are not usually a fan of fantasy, I think that this is a book that will appeal to everyone. It has a little bit of everything I love... romance, mystery, intriguing characters and an intense storyline that keeps you engaged from start to finish.

Another wonderful addition to the bookshelf of Amy Harmon! I loved, loved, loved it... :)

Many thanks to the author for the ARC...
