Dive into a world torn apart by a powerful race with phenomenal powers of the mind—and none of the heart…
In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of “rehabilitation”— the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was….
Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a Changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy co-existence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several Changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his packmate, and Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. But he soon discovers that this ice-cold Psy is very capable of passion—and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities—or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation…

This is a PR series that I've seen floating around for a while but just haven't found the time to start. So, when netgalley was offering copies of book one for review I thought... why not see what all of the fuss is about. :)
I think what I liked most about the book is that it is a very unique storyline involving a new type of species I haven't read before anywhere else... The Psy. They reminded me of the Vulcan race in Star Trek. All logic and no emotion. The only difference is that they were not designed this way, they were taught to conform to this lifestyle through a movement called the Silence. Emotions and feelings are now considered "flaws" in this race and any sign of it means you will end up in rehabilitation. In other words, you are destined to become a vegetable because your mind will be stripped. It's a very cruel and confusing world that had me wondering why they went to such great lengths to eradicate emotions from their people. Sascha knows that she is flawed and has spent her entire life pouring all of her energy into masking them because for her rehabilitation is a fate worse than death.
Sascha finds herself in the company of Lucas as business partners. An unusual partnership but a necessary one for him because they are desperate to find out who is killing changeling women and they are certain that the Psy are involved. He is hoping to gain entrance into the Psy-net through Sascha so they can gather information to help them find the killer.
Meeting Lucas has sent Sascha spiraling into a world of feelings and emotions that she can no longer keep under control. Lucas introduces her to a world of passion and desire. She becomes a slave to the sensations she has always been denied. It also means certain death for her because this type of behavior is not tolerated in her world.
There is a lot going on in this story between the Psy and their desire for control and power and the inner workings of all of the different changeling groups. So, not a book that you can breeze through quickly. You have to read it carefully so you are able to figure out this complicated Psy-net.
My only complaint about this story is the direction things went when Lucas finally realizes that Sascha is his destined mate. He became a little bossy and overbearing for my liking and I was a little disappointed that this suddenly took precedence over finding the kidnapped changeling girl who they KNEW was being tortured. Not really the best time to be claiming your mate. Sascha was way too independent to cower to his demands so easily. So, I thought that was a little far fetched.
I think I would have preferred a slower coming together of Sascha and Lucas and more time spent hunting for the kidnapped woman. It just took way too long for them to resolve the case. So, the last half of the book I found a bit frustrating. I lost a lot of love for Lucas at putting this young woman's life in danger and allowing her to be tortured longer than necessary because he was being all alpha male. I know, I know... he's a changeling and they are slaves to their instinct to protect their mate.. yada yada yada.. lol. It still bugged me...
Having said that, I love the Psy World and yes, I'm definitely on board to continue with the series. Now I just have to find time to squeeze in 13 more installments because this series has been out for a while. Wish me luck! :)
