Summary
Can you turn the clock back on your first love? Would you even want to try?
Alex McCann and Teodora "Ted" Vasquez left Cambio Springs together. Ted came back. Alex didn't.
Now, years later, the future alpha of the McCann wolves has returned with plans to bring new life to the dying desert community. Plans that could change everything for the isolated enclave of shapeshifters in the California desert. Some love the plan. Others hate it.
As the town's doctor and one of the strongest daughters in the cat clan, Ted has her own concerns about exposing her community to outsiders. The two former lovers are at each other's throats. And everyone is watching to see what happens.
But when murder once again strikes Cambio Springs, can they overcome their past to help the community they both call home? And can the love they shared once burn again when so many stand against it?
4 stars ****
I was asked to review this title and then discovered it was book two in the series... ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!! But, no worries... it was easily read as a stand alone. Whew! I do plan to go back and read the first book so I can catch up on previous characters.
So, this book focuses primarily on the love/hate relationship between cat shifter Ted and wolf shifter Alex. Two alphas that always seem to be at war with one another and are haunted by a hurtful past. Ted knows she can't deny how she feels about Alex but is struggling to trust him with her heart. Alex has been known to walk away before and he has some work to do if he wants her back for good. They have a very angsty and sometimes humorous relationship that made them a fun couple to get to know. And sometimes their animal instincts take over... especially when it comes to their attraction to each other. Just a smidgen of sexual tension... :)
Cambio Springs is a community that harbors a large variety of shifters ranging from snakes, to wolves, to cats and even bears. Lots of diversity in this small little town! I think this aspect will appeal to anyone who likes small town romances... with an edge of paranormal of course.
This is not a series that requires a lot of world building. It's a very simplistic setting and a story that revolves around small town relationships and the problems that can arise... the only difference is these characters shift into animals. There is also an element of suspense with the murder mystery that needs to be solved.
If you are someone that likes a lot of layers, detail and depth in your paranormal romance... this might not be a good series to choose. It's a good story but simplistic compared to others I have read. But, if you like PR that centers mostly around the couple with a smidgen of suspense then this will be right up your alley. I tend to like both depending on my mood. Sometimes I want to dive into something deep and layered but sometimes I just want something light and airy... this is definitely light and airy! I liked it and will definitely be continuing with the series.
