| Beck Anderson believes in the power of perfectly imperfect women and
in the healing power of love. Her new novel, Fix You, grew out of those
beliefs and the time to write afforded by the worst Thanksgiving
blizzard she’s ever witnessed in West Yellowstone. For Beck, the path to published novelist has taken lots of twists and turns, including a degree in anthropology, a stint as a ticket seller at a ski resort, a much-loved career as a high school English teacher, and a long tenure as a member of the best writing group ever, hands down. Beck balances (clumsily at best) writing novels and screenplays, working full-time as an educator, mothering two pre-teen males, loving one post-40 husband, and making time to walk the foothills of Boise, Idaho, with Stefano DiMera Delfino Anderson, the suavest Chihuahua north of the border. |
Meet Kelly Reynolds from Fix You

I love Kelly to death. I wanted her to be a real girl
head to toe. Fix You is written from
her point of view, and I wanted readers to see her, warts and all.
Kelly is based on all of my girlfriends and a little of
me, too. When I was in college, one of my roommates told me the story of
feeling like she was the ugly duckling. Everyone else looked like swans,
gliding gracefully along the lake. She felt like she was paddling for dear
life, and she didn’t fit in with all of the swans. The crazy thing is that I
think we ALL feel that way, but we don’t realize we’re all having the same
experience! So Kelly is a tribute to every woman who feels like she’s paddling
for dear life.
Kelly’s a survivor, but she doesn’t realize how strong
she is, because she’s still fighting every day. She’s lonely, but I don’t think
she realizes it, not until Andrew comes along. She’s still looking for a
purpose that is just hers. She’s like many of us – giving all of herself to her
children, to running a household, and she might have lost herself along the
way.
Kelly is a pretty woman, dark-haired and fair-skinned,
but she’s usually in running clothes with dog hair all over them, and she’s a
pony tail girl. It was important to me
that in creating a real character, she’s not impossibly skinny, either. Most
women aren’t a size four, so Kelly couldn’t be, not for me to feel like she was
authentic.
