Maggie Brock has everything under
control. Even her divorce, though painful at the time, only
registers as a minor blip in her carefully constructed universe. Life in
Prairie Oaks has once again returned to a smooth, predictable pace…until an
angel shows up in her bedroom.
The angel is just as bewildered as Maggie about
why he’s been sent to her, but their unsuccessful efforts to gain understanding
of the mystery fade to the background as their relationship grows. Soon,
Maggie’s biggest problem becomes the angel himself, as her feelings for him
develop into something less than saintly.
While Maggie struggles to keep her desires pure,
a nefarious being lurks in the shadows of Prairie Oaks, watching and waiting
for the opportunity to fulfill his ambiguous purpose. Preying on her conflicted
emotions, the demon manipulates her at every opportunity, but the one to
deliver Maggie directly into his hands is the last person she’d expect.
Writing wasn't something Nicki set out to do; it just sort of happened when she realized writing reports was by far her favorite part of her investment consulting position. She traded stock allocation and diversification for story arcs and dialogue and now weaves her creative writing time in with the other activities of her busy life with her family in the Chicago suburbs.
Nicki writes with two goals in mind: #1 to keep the characters realistic, even when their circumstances are anything but, and #2 to make the reader feel. Her published works include Three Daves, a light-hearted romantic romp through a 1980s college campus, Divine Temptation, a romantic novel of angelic proportions, and short stories “Sway” (available as a single), “I Don’t Do Valentine’s Day” (part of A Valentine Anthology), and “Impressionism 101” (included in the debut issue of Insatiable: The Magazine of Paranormal Desire).

The Paranormal in
DIVINE TEMPTATION
The story I wanted to explore was that of a mature,
responsible adult woman and how she’d react to a supernatural white knight
suddenly being inserted into her life. So the first question was—which brand of
paranormal to choose? It didn’t take me long to settle on angel. I love to read
all genres, with fantasy being my favorite, but in my writing I tend toward
realistic, and since I wholeheartedly believe in angels, this was the obvious
choice for me.
The mystery and unknowns surrounding angels meant I had a
chance to play with the lore and create some of my own—like angels not having names until humans, the ones
who need them, give them one, and angels simply knowing what they’re meant to
know, nothing more, nothing less, and the watery, melting sensation of an
angel’s touch. One of my favorite inventions was a delightful little thing
called the angel’s kiss. But there are certain philosophical matters that I didn’t
feel comfortable messing with, so for these I resorted to “You wouldn’t
understand,” which Evan tells Maggie all the time…and it gets under her skin to
no end. This angel has no wings, but he does wear white.
I also got to play with demons. In the opening scene we meet a powerful demon
as he arrives on Earth and mutates into the form of an ordinary man. In my lore,
the strongest demons can mutate into human form on their own, but the lesser
ones must partially possess an existing body in order to walk. The demons
disappear into the background of this primarily reality-based story for a
while, but readers get hints of them along the way. One of the most interesting
things that I got to invent for this story was a demonic prophecy that had been
ignored for too long and all the rules that went along with it. But sometimes
it’s fun to stick to rules that have already been written, so for the exorcism,
I followed the real-life rituals practiced by exorcists—that was some intriguing
research.
