UNTEACHABLE by Leah Raeder

“Complicated dynamics, forbidden sexual tension, and untamed passion. Easily one of my favorite reads.”
--Gail McHugh, New York Times bestselling author

An edgy, sexy USA TODAY bestseller about falling for the one person you can’t have.
Maise O’Malley just turned eighteen, but she’s felt like a grown-up her entire life. The summer before senior year, she has plans: get into a great film school, convince her mom to go into rehab, and absolutely do not, under any circumstances, screw up her own future.

But life has a way of throwing her plans into free-fall.

When Maise meets Evan at a carnival one night, their chemistry is immediate, intense, and short-lived. Which is exactly how she likes it: no strings. But afterward, she can’t get Evan out of her head. He’s taught her that a hookup can be something more. It can be an unexpected connection with someone who truly understands her. Someone who sees beyond her bravado to the scared but strong girl inside.

That someone turns out to be her new film class teacher, Mr. Evan Wilke.

Maise and Evan resolve to keep their hands off each other, but the attraction is too much to bear. Together, they’re real and genuine; apart, they’re just actors playing their parts for everyone else. And their masks are slipping. People start to notice. Rumors fly. When the truth comes to light in a shocking way, they may learn they were just playing parts for each other, too.

Smart, sexy, and provocative, Unteachable is about what happens when a love story goes off-script.

What an incredible read. First, the way Leah Raeder wove her words on the page was a wonderful thing to read. I was taken away to a gritty carnival with such poetic prose. I am going to immerse myself in this woman library of work for sure.

Unteachable is raw, smart adolescence. Coming of age for a girl who for all intense and purposes has had to grow up year before her time. Maise has already seen the bloom off the rose. So when she meets the older, Evan, on the front row seat of a rollercoaster, it’s no surprise he just another guy. Someone to hang with, take the edge off with. Only he acts like she is worth more, is special, and demands a connection. Slipping away from him should be easy. They were a night to let loose. A release. So why can’t she get him out of her mind?

You can see the daddy issues a mile away. Sure she will be attracted to this guy. Why not? Druggie mom and dead beat dad. Student-teacher romance, a tale told time and time again. This is different. I repeat, this is different. This author makes you pay attention. It is just so well written. A beautiful painful read written with an artist’s hand. I feel in love, hurt and raged right along with Maise. Seeing her thirst for love and longing for real connection was so real and all encompassing.

Centered in high school this could easily be considered NA, heck maybe it is, didn’t feel that way to me. It felt like a sweeping novel.
