As though in answer to his thoughts, he glanced up and found her standing in front of the train station looking absolutely gorgeous. Her strawberry-blond hair was pulled up with just a few wispy strands around her face and neck. It was just the way he had imagined she would look on their wedding day.
The thought of their ruined wedding plans dashed his excitement. Still, he couldn’t take his eyes off of her. She was simply stunning. The short coral dress complemented her complexion. He was relieved to find that she had more color in her face, but that could just be makeup.
He caught sight of the sparkly heels that showed off her legs and he couldn’t help but smile. It was the first time his mood had lifted since…well, since she’d moved out. And it felt good. Maybe it was a good omen for the day.
Their gazes met and held. His heart thumped against his ribs, harder and faster. Today had to go just right. Everything was riding on it.
“Ah, it looks like we’re getting our first clue about where the wedding will be.” Mr. Potter gestured toward Bella.
It was then that Mason realized she was holding a sign that read WEDDING GUESTS THIS WAY. There was an arrow pointed toward the train station. He was intrigued.
“I guess we’re about to find out.” Mason rubbed his hands together. “I’ve never been to a mystery wedding before. I have the feeling it’s going to be something big.”
The man glanced over at him, taking in his tux. “Aren’t you part of the wedding party?”
“Yes, sir. I am.”
“Then shouldn’t you know the details of the wedding?”
“The bride and groom wanted the wedding to be a surprise.” And then just to make sure he made the point perfectly clear, he added, “For everyone.”
Mr. Potter shook his head. “I don’t know how you’re supposed to be trusted with our town when you don’t seem to know much and you couldn’t even hang on to that pretty little thing.” Mr. Potter gestured to Bella. “Perhaps you should just stick with your business and let others deal with the town.”
Mason’s back teeth ground together. Do not engage. Do not!
“Looks like I should check with Bella to find out where I’m supposed to be.” Mason said good-bye and moved away from Mr. Potter as fast as he could without being obvious. That was one vote he could obviously write off.
Mason dismissed his conversation with Mr. Potter. He had a bigger issue on his mind—Bella. He’d worked it all out in his head. He would offer to help with the down payment and co-sign the loan for her. In exchange, he needed her help.
Because in the end, he couldn’t win back Bella without his business. And he couldn’t win the election and keep his business afloat without Bella. It was all intertwined.
