I was first drawn to read this book because it just has a beautiful cover. I am a sucker for pretty covers. And, I was intrigued with the idea of Sam and her discovery of a diary in a storage unit she bought through an auction. Perhaps it's my nosey nature that intrigued me... hide your diaries! I found the story very engaging and read it in one sitting. It is a short read so if you're looking for something you can start and finish quickly this is a good choice.
Sam is recovering from the tragic loss of her husband and trying to find inspiration to write again. She went to an auction at a storage facility and bought the contents of one due to the photo albums she knew were there. She is hoping to find inspiration to write from these items. What she didn't expect was to find a diary of a young woman named Colleen and her time she spent at the Sunset Motel in the 60's. Due to some complicated circumstances that occurred with her family, Colleen had been sent to this motel to serve as a mistress to a man named Leo in exchange for payment of a debt. The events that occur at the Sunset Motel were not what Colleen expected however, and Leo was not the man she thought he would be.
This story is very sensual and full of passion and I enjoyed that part of the book. Colleen is new to the game of intimacy so the sex scenes were mostly about Leo awakening her senses and lots of exploration and teaching moments. What I wish however, is that we had an opportunity to spend time with them outside of the bedroom! Even though I love my steamy time... I also like to be emotionally invested in the characters. It's hard to do that when all you get are bedroom scenes. But, I do like Sam and her back story and book one intrigued me enough to continue on with the series. The blurb for book two takes us back to Sunset Motel again except now it's in the present. Sam decides to rent the same room that Colleen stayed in and use that as a place to write. My suspicion is that Sam will hopefully find some passion of her own. So, yeah I'm game for book two.
