It's Release Day!! Donners of the Dead by Karina Halle

Karina Halle Donners of the Dead

***A Standalone Horror Romance***

Jake McGraw was unlike anyone I’d ever known. He was brash, rude, unapologetic and arrogant; chauvinistic, close-minded, and terribly stubborn. He was built like a tree, tall with a hard chest and wide shoulders and hands that looked like they could wrestle a bear. He was a cigar-chomping, scruffy-faced, beast of a man. I was pretty sure I hated him. And I know he hated me. But among the flesh-eating monsters in these snow-capped mountains, he was the only thing keeping me alive

The year is 1851 and pioneers in search of California gold are still afraid to travel on the same route as the tragic Donner party did years before. When the last wagon train to go into the Sierra Nevada mountains fails to arrive at their destination, Eve Smith, an 18-year old half-native girl with immense tracking skills is brought along with the search party, headed by an enigmatic former Texas Ranger, Jake McGraw. What they find deep in the dangerous snow-covered terrain is a terrifying consequence of cannibalism, giving new meaning to the term “monster.” While the search party is slowly picked off, one by one, Eve must learn to trust Jake, who harbors more than a few secrets of his own, in order to survive and prevent the monstrosities from reaching civilization.

***This is NOT New Adult***

I'm a big fan of the walking dead... and of Karina Halle... which makes this book a win-win!
The weapon of the day in the 1800's for killing zombies??... the axe! :) Coming in as a close second is a hunky Texas Ranger named Jake who is good at using one!
Are you wondering if this book might be a little too creepy?? Well, I would say that the creep factor was quite tolerable and a bit on the lite side. But, I am a huge fan of zombie flicks so my tolerance is high when it comes to the gore that is a realistic part of the zombie package. And, there is a budding romance in this story that does help take your mind off of the walking dead.
I LOVE that this was based on a true story. And yes, there is something a little more horrific to me about the idea of living people who consciously resort to cannibalism. Humans can sometimes become the monsters.
The creatures in these mountains were called many different things... and, it was a mystery as to where they came from originally. Everyone had their own name for them. But, the one thing that was very evident was their need and desire for human flesh.
This does take place in the 1800's so you have to do a bit of time travel and get yourself in that state of mind. If anything, this book made me appreciate modern weaponry! No time for loading shotguns when you're surrounded by monsters... just grab the axe! And, work on your cardio... :)
